In this work, we prove a generalization of the well-known Nikolayevsky’s nice basis criterion ([Nik2, Theorem 3]) in the following sense: we introduce the notion of nice space of a reductive representation and in the case that such representation is rational (like in the theory of algebraic groups), we give an easy-to-check convex geometry condition to determine when the orbit of an element in a nice space contains critical points of the norm squared of the moment map of the representation (i.e. the orbit is distinguished). Also, we give many characterizations of a nice space which are very useful in practice.
As an application of the above results, we characterize the stratified set of (real or complex) ternary forms of any degree with respect to the natural action of GL3(F) (F = R, respectively
F = C). We also give tools to construct minimal compatible metrics for geometric structures on nilmanifolds and use them to study the existence problem of such metrics. We classify compatible minimal metrics for symplectic 2-step nilpotent Lie algebras of dimension 6.
A second main result in the thesis is the classification of 7-dimensional Einstein nilradicals.
To obtain such classification, we make use of some results given by Nikolayevsky in [Nik2],
and particularly the already mentioned nice basis criterion.
